COVINGTON, Ind. – Today, Paula Copenhaver released the following statement regarding false and misleading attacks from Spencer Deery.

“Spencer Deery is so desperate to distract from his anti-Hoosier record that he is lying, misleading voters, and falsely twisting events from my past troubled marriage for his own political gain.

During that time, I was forced into legal battles I did not initiate and subjected to scrutiny I did not seek, at the hands of my ex-husband. Through it all, my focus never wavered – I remained committed to being a good mother and protecting my children.

Spencer Deery claims I stole $120,000 from a small business – this is completely false. The truth is, my ex-husband was involved in a civil lawsuit with his former business partner. No criminal charges or investigations were ever filed. It was simply a business dispute between my ex-husband and his former business partner - nothing more. During our divorce proceedings, a judge also made it clear that I was exonerated from his business dealings.

Spencer Deery admitted ‘it’s certainly possible (the people who made the ad) got carried away a little bit.’ While he pretends to have no involvement in the ad, the television disclaimer clearly states ‘Paid for by Spencer Deery for Indiana.’ He had direct involvement and sole authority to approve this ad filled with lies.

Spencer Deery portrays himself as a man of faith and honesty, yet he has no hesitation in exploiting and twisting deeply and painful personal experiences for political gain. It’s disappointing to see him stoop to a level of politics he claims to oppose. Campaigns have a way of revealing a person’s true character.

Unlike Spencer Deery, I will not engage in personal attacks. My focus remains on the issues that matter to the Hoosiers of District 23 – lowering property taxes, cutting burdensome regulations, reducing the size of government, and standing up to the radical green energy schemes and carbon capture pipelines that Spencer forced into Vermillion County.

Hoosiers deserve better than dishonest attacks, they deserve real leadership.”
